Carl Junction, MO raising big money for breast cancer research
Post office, mini-skirts, Branson Zipline, and poodle skirts play part

(Branson, MO – Thursday, October 13, 2011) — Want to know how to raise big bucks for breast cancer research? Just ask Carl Junction’s Chamber of Commerce President, Gary Stubblefield. This month, Stubblefield plans to take part in a flash mob, illuminate Carl Junction with pink lighting, wear a pink mini-skirt at city council meetings and among other things – if Carl Junction can raise over $40,000 – wear a pink poodle skirt while zipping at Wolfe Creek Preserve home of Branson Zipline Canopy Tours. And not just any zip, he’ll take flight on the Blue Streak Fast Line (at one point soaring over 150’ in the air) and then take the plunge on the Freefall Xpress, North America’s only 100’ freefall dismount controlled by a power fan.

Carl Junction is a small Missouri community (pop. 7,500) however in 2010 they took second place nationally in raising funds to purchase breast cancer awareness postage stamps. Those funds go towards breast cancer research. Stubblefield says, “In addition Carl Junction CARES, the group supporting stamp sales, has fundraising and awareness activities to raise money for the Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks (BCFO), the Hope4You breast cancer foundation and for the association Early Detection Works.” For October, National Breast Cancer Awareness month, Carl Junction CARES, led by Stubblefield, plans for dozens of activities to help them take first place in raising funds for 2011. “Last year, the post office that placed first in the nation sold $42,000 worth of stamps, our goal is to beat that amount. If we can raise over $40,000 by October 31, you’ll see me and my pretty pink poodle skirt at Branson Zipline Canopy Tours on November 5. I hope to be joined by our City Council, the mayor, city administrators and Carl Junction Post Master,” says Stubblefield. “Now that will be worth the price of the stamps alone.”

There are additional activities and ways that you can help Carl Junction meet its goal. “With Carl Junction Cares the bottom line is anything can be done, if you believe enough in what you are doing. We have had two detections in our first 3 years of doing this. That is what I am most proud of,” says Stubblefield. “We will be busy just about every day to bring attention to the cause.” The observance kicked off the first of October with Carl Junction going pink at dusk and sales of the official United States Postal Service’s breast cancer awareness postage stamp at the Carl Junction post office, 111 S. Main St. The lighting, along with pink ribbons on utility poles and pink awareness ribbons on Main Street, will be in place throughout the month. Currently the list of activities includes:
• Oct. 15, “Zumba to Show You Care” from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Primary K-2 North School gymnasium.
• Oct. 16, “CJHS/FBLA Breast Cancer Walk to Show You Care” from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Carl Junction High School Bulldog Stadium, under the direction of the Carl Junction High School Future Business Leaders of America. Prizes will be awarded to the largest team, most creatively costumed team and more.
• If, by Oct. 18, the post office hits the $20,000 mark in stamp sales, Carl Junction City Administrator Steve Lawyer will wear a pink mini-skirt to the City Council meeting.
• Oct. 20, a flash mob, “Twist to Show You Care”. Location to be announced on facebook “Have your pink shirt on and be ready to do the twist in the area’s largest flash mob ever,” said Stubblefield.
• Oct. 25, Mercy Hospital’s mobile mammography unit will be in the Carl Junction Community Center parking lot from 8a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:30p.m.
• Oct. 27, Carl Junction CARES (CJ CARES) will have an information booth set up at “Bridging the Generations” senior expo from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Bridge, 3405 S. Hammons Blvd.
• Oct. 28, the fourth annual CJ CARES “Community Snapshot to Show You Care” will be taken in ribbon formation at 6:30 p.m. at the Carl Junction High School stadium. Public participation is sought for the event.
• Other events that have taken place include: The “Skate to Show You Care” held at Spinning Wheels SK8 Center. At that time the post office hit $10,000 in breast cancer awareness postage stamp sales, the entire City Council wore pink poodle skirts to that night’s council meeting. Saturday, Oct. 8, “Breast Cancer Awareness Biker Style,” a breast cancer awareness expo, was held from 10 a.m. to noon at Cycle Connection of Joplin.

Branson Performers help out with Joplin clean up effort

The support is coming from everywhere now dozens of Branson performers will participate in the Joplin relief effort during a Branson cares telethon.

We will air that telethon on Sunday, June 26th but today Angela Garcia met up with a number of those performers who are already getting started.

The sound of chainsaws and stacking debris aren't typical sounds coming from these Branson entertainers.

A handful of performers put their normal jobs on hold to help clean up Joplin neighborhoods.

"we're glad to be here glad to help out however we can- good way to spend the weekend. The silver lining in all of this is that so many people can come together and do some good together. It just makes you feel good inside."

The Hughes brothers signed up to volunteer through their church

They will also participate in the Branson Cares Telethon.

This was the first time many of the performers had been in Joplin since the tornado hit.

"I just couldn't believe the devastation. All the trees torn apart. The buildings leveled, uh pieces of metal and buildings wrapped around trees. It's hard to believe. It's completely different to see things first hand than to see it on the news or see pictures of it. "

Tim Dutton and his wife volunteered through the boomtown days event.

They signed up for the race which was then changed to a clean up day after the tornado.

"Many of the Branson performers say they offer relief to people through their entertainment. After seeing the devastation in Joplin they knew they had to bring their effort here."

"The one thing that can never be taken from us is our hope. And that's something that we can all give as Branson entertains. We entertain- but being able to come up here and let the people know that even as far away as Branson- that we're thinking about them we care enough that we wanna come up here, clean up and help them rebuild."

Longtime Branson entertainer Moe Bandy has decided he will not perform at the Jim Stafford Theatre this season as he had planned, and the “Top 10 Rock and Roll Revue,” a tribute show that recently began its third season at the Branson Mall, will take his place.

Cindy Merry, Bandy’s publicist, said his touring schedule and some other projects he is working on forced him to push his opening date at the Jim Stafford Theatre back to Sept. 4. Merry, who is also Stafford’s marketing consultant, said the theater was having difficulty finding an act that would agree to perform at the time slot only for the next few months.

“Moe Bandy and the Staffords are really good friends,” Merry said. “And when Moe found out nobody wanted the spot if they couldn’t go all year, he was gracious enough to give it up.”

WALNUT SHADE, Mo. -- A new attraction opens this weekend just north of Branson. It takes you zipping above the tree lines. For some, that sounds like a blast. For KY3 News anchor Maria Neider, it's just downright scary. Here's her experience on the zipline ride.

"Go ahead and step into the harness," guide Robert Cameron instructed.

When you suffer from acrophobia, strapping in for this ride will cause the sweat to break out. Neider has it -- bad.

"Are you nervous?" she was asked.

"Paul, of course, I'm nervous. That's crazy," she replied.

Neider has a severe anxiety about heights.

"Are you going to laugh at Maria?" a reprter asked General Manager Emma Hamilton.

"No, I won't laugh. I've been there too. I totally understand," said Hamilton.

"This is the tether; this connects to the actual zipline and the trolley," said Cameron.

Neider and I planned to test out the new ziplines. Ziplines are wires that you ride. They're some 50, 60, 70 feet in the air, above the trees.

"The helmet is for if something were to fall from above. It's not necessarily because we think you're going to fall," said Hamilton.

"I need that reassurance. That's a good thing," said Neider.

Before we went up, we signed waivers, got some instructions and climbed to the first tower. Neider's knuckles turned white as she got ready.

"We're going to connect you right up here, so move forward," said Hamilton.

"It's my lifeline," said Neider.

As we move closer, Neider looked like she was walking the plank on a pirate ship.

"You'll love it!" said Hamilton.

At the word "Go," I was off and flying. Neider was left standing on the platform with the clock ticking.

"Are you ready?" Hamilton asked.

"Yeah, I'm as ready as I'm going to get, if I can release my white knuckle grip," said Neider.

She finally jumped.

"Oh my god! Whoooooooo! Oh my god!" she said.

"It was totally frightening, letting go. I don't know how you can let go so fast. Oh, it was fun."

"So, you were able to face your fears today?" she was asked.

"I did it. Yes, I did. I do have a fear of heights still, but it was fun. I felt totally secure," said Neider.

The tours range in cost from $40 to $100. It opens Saturday, although the first couple of weeks are sold out, so call ahead or check the Branson Zipline Canopy Tours Web site before you go.

My family and I had the most amazing weekend. This was our very first family vacation, I can wish I was kidding, but sadly I’m not.

As most of my readers know we live in Arkansas, North West to be exact. I love it here, it’s a big difference from California where I grew up at.

Have you guys ever been to Branson, MO? If you haven’t you are really missing out on loads of fun! I know that when some people think of Branson, MO they think it’s for the ‘older crowd’. Well times ARE changing and it’s not just for the older crowd, it’s also for the young!
From there we headed to our hotel. Can you say love at first sight??? Ahhh, yes!

This hotel is absolutely breathtaking!

The view is absolutely stunning, the rooms were gorgeous! We were able to get a joining room, one with a king size bed and a sofa and the other room with 2 double beds. Each room had a beautiful balcony which you could see the stunning view from. I didn’t want to leave it was absolutely gorgeous

When we arrived we went straight to our first destination which was the Branson Dinosaur Museum.
This was a lot of fun and my children really enjoyed it. Stay with me as I bring you the full review

In the same building as the Branson’s Dinosaur Museum there was also Haunted in Branson.

My husband and my daughter Alysia went into this one, it’s like a haunted house, very cool! I was outside talking with some very friendly ticket people and I heard my daughter scream, too funny! It’s a live haunted house that you can see anytime of year!

These were tons of fun and they even had a Bounce House inside that my kids just LOVED

The show we saw was called The Shanghai Circus. They were SO unbelievable and so great! They kept my childrens attention throughout the whole show. It’s acrobats from China. They are in the US doing shows in Branson, MO 9 months out of the year and go home to Shanghai, China 3 months out of the year. I was absolutely stunned at the beauty of the show, the women (and girls, there was one who was only 14!) were beautiful. They were so elegant. And I must say just beautiful beyond words! They all have such an amazing talent, they really had me in ‘awe’.

We saw the Kirby VanBurch show. It’s a magic show, well illusions as he says it. It’s AMAZING. My kids LOVED this show and what kid doesn’t love magic and illusions!? Kirby VanBurch is a great entertainer and we had a lot of fun and lots of laughs! We were even able to tour the big cats after the show! There was even a lion that looked kinda mad if you ask me lol…But beautiful to say the least! I loved that he included the cats into the show.

More than 13,000 people packed into the Branson Convention Center for the all-day event preceding the weigh-in ceremony. Toddlers caught fish in a tiny tank while pros discussed lures with eager hobbyists. Vendors peddled rods and reels and spinners and swimmers and spoons. Country singer Moe Bandy sang the national anthem before a 15-foot blimp, shaped like a fish, floated around the room.

One by one, anglers grabbed their catches by the gills and held them up to the crowd.
There were gasps and cheers as the bass hit the scales and the weight was announced and recorded.

Despite the wet, overcast day Thursday, the sun seemed to be shining brightly over the New Shanghai Theatre as the New Shanghai Circus received several local dignitaries, as well as some from China, as it was presented with a rare honor.

“The reason I came here today is to honor the New Shanghai Circus as an International Foundation of Chinese Cultural Entertainment,” Jin Lin, president of the Acrobats Association, said through an interpreter. “To the Chinese people, this is a very amazing honor.”

This honor is so special, just the fact it was presented on American soil says something about the relationship between China and the United States.

“This team has made a great contribution to our Chinese culture,” Lin said. “They have brought our heritage to many American people, which helps not only show our culture, but build our relationships. Our continued success relies on the people of Taney County, the Chamber of Commerce and members of the media.”

Lin also spoke of the importance of having a good relationship between two important countries.

“After several years of heightened relationships, now the Chinese and American people have a very decent friendship,” Lin said. “You can buy all products made in China in the United States, and in China, we see McDonald’s, Coca-Cola and Kentucky Fried Chicken everywhere.”

The Chinese people believe that sharing their culture and heritage with the rest of the world will bring people closer together.

“It is really unusual for a Chinese businessman to come to America, start a corporation and be able to compete in a market such as Branson,” Cindy Merry said. “This event is being featured on newspapers and television shows all over China. This is really a big deal.”

In addition to Lin, Western Taney County Commissioner Jim Strafuss also presented the theater with a resolution from the county that he presented with the help of his daughter, Liberty, who he adopted from China in 2004.

“The Chinese culture is very near and dear to my heart,” Strafuss said. “The theater and this association has a lot of community involvement, including the Adopted Chinese Children Association, and we are very honored they chose Taney County for their home base to showcase these acrobats.”

Jerry Adams, Branson public information director, was also on hand to honor the guests.

“It is an honor to have all these dignitaries from China here in Branson,” Adams said. “Having this show here really expands what Branson has to offer to the millions of tourists that visit our community. Plus, it gives the area such a great international flare.”

The New Shanghai Circus will also be an integral part of a 2010 promotion called “See the World in Branson.” More details on the promotion as they become available.

“I think that this is all just great,” Merry said. “They add something really different to Branson.”

What do the New Shanghai Circus and the Baldknobbers have in common?

On October 22, the “New Shanghai Circus,” founded in Shanghai, China by Mr. Lizhi Zhao in 1991, received a plaque of recognition from Mr. Jian Lin, President of the Chinese Acrobats Association (CAA), honoring the “New Shanghai Circus” for sharing Chinese talent, entertainment and culture with the United States and other nations. What’s remarkable is that the award was presented to Mr. Zhao, not in Shanghai, China, but over 7,254 miles away in Branson, Missouri.

Even more remarkable is the fact that the award was presented to Mr. Zhao, and other representatives of the “New Shanghai Circus,” in the “New Shanghai Circus Theatre” built in Branson specifically to accommodate the performances of one of Branson’ s most unique and beautiful shows, “The Acrobats of China.” Some might ask, “What’s a Chinese acrobatic show doing in Branson, Missouri where the Baldknobbers country music and comedy show started it all 50 years ago?” The answer is, “Doing the same thing the Baldknobbers did, and are still doing 50 years later, providing Branson visitors with a quality entertainment experience.”

What an evolution has taken place since the first Baldknobbers show. The Branson show scene has grown and expanded to the point where, from comedy to outdoor drama and music from country to opera, the Branson entertainment experience has a high quality show available for just about every taste. Last week, the League of Branson Theatre Owners and Show Producers, along with sponsors the Branson Tourism Center, Branson.com, and Best Buy hosted their first ever “Party With The Stars” event. Held at Chateau on the Lake Resort & Spa, this event allowed Branson entertainers, theater owners, musicians and anyone who works in the business to mingle with area residents.

“Yakov Sm-irnoff asked me if we could do one every month,” Cindy Merry, marketing team chair of the Branson theatre league, said.

“Everyone just seemed to have a great time. I loved it. I had a blast.”

As guests arrived, they walked a red carpet, complete with photographers, a television camera from the Vacation Channel and Branson’s very own Joan Rivers, portrayed by Terry Sanders.

“He makes me so mad because he has the best set of legs,” Merry said. “But he donated his own time and worked the red carpet, making everyone feel like a star.”

Unbeknownst to the interviewees, the entire red carpet entries were broadcast on a large television inside the event. That way, everyone inside could see the parade of stars.

“That was really neat, and the Vacation Channel donated their time and equipment, as well.” Merry said.

Once inside, guests were treated to dining and dancing, a silent auction and the chance to play the new “Rock Band: The Beatles” game on a big screen television, which was donated by Best Buy in Branson.

As the evening grew later, the stars began to arrive after finishing off their evening shows. Jim Stafford, Yakov Smirnoff, Paul Revere, Bill and McKenna Medley, Doug Gabriel and his family, members of the Platters, the Liverpool Legends, Legends in Concert, Mike Walker, The Haygoods, Six and the Hughes Brothers were just a few of the many stars who showed up to party.

Mayor Reanne Presley presented a key to the city to the Mabe family in honor of 50 years entertaining Ozark Mountain Country residents. After the presentation, singing impressionist Mike Walker did his rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” while everyone hit the dance floor.

“I was out there doing the electric slide while my son was doing a moonwalk,” Merry said. “Those are the types of things that we usually don’t get to share with members of the community.”

One major factor to the evening was the fact that area entertainers came out and supported the event.

“They really came out in force,” Merry said. “It was great to see them signing autographs and talking to the fans in attendance. We really needed a night like this.”

I could not agree more.

For the past several years it seems like the fact that this is such a small community has been lost in the everyday shuffle of life. Many theater owners and show producers who have done “hit and run” shows to make a quick buck before getting out of town are becoming a thing of the past. With the current economic climate and the state of things being unsure, it is nice to see a group of people who have been in town such a long time giving the people who make Branson go ‘round, the workers and residents, an opportunity to take part in an event like this.

“I grew up here, and this reminded me of the old days where everyone was family,” Merry said. “You know, that community feeling that everyone is working together to make this town the special place that it is.”

Acrobats of China provide an incredible entertainment experience

Even after living in Branson for over 23 years the variety and quality of the shows that Branson provides on a daily basis is amazing. From comedy to outdoor drama and music from country to opera there is a high quality show available for just about every interest.

However, even in the “Live music show capital of the world” there are some shows that are so unique, both in terms of their type and in the manner in which they are presented, that they in fact define a genre of show and the standard of excellence for that genre.

The “Acrobats of China,” presented by The New Shanghai Circus, is such a show. Currently there is nothing in Branson that remotely resembles the type of show and the near perfection of its cast as they perform exciting, colorful, and action filled feats providing their audiences with an incredible one of a kind entertainment experience.

Right from the beginning this show sets the pace for what is to come. What a fantastic way to start the show and “raise the bar” of expectation for the rest of the show. There was so much going on it was hard to take it all in, but one thing was apparent, there was more talent on that stage doing more things than could possibly be featured in one show.

There was one young lady doing things with an object on a string that was simply amazing. Although it was subsequently explained that it was a type of Chinese Yoyo called a “Diabolo,” the explanation was only sought out because of the skill of the performer and her amazing performance. In a lot of shows it would have been a “blow away” opening act by itself, however, it was just one of a series of amazing activities presented in rapid succession during the opening number.

This writer doesn’t recall ever seeing an opening act to a show in Branson or anywhere else that has more excitement, action, color, or better costuming. Simply put, make sure you’re in your seat when the curtain goes up because this is one opening act you don’t want to miss.
Everything about this show is about excellence, synchronization, excitement, precision, skill and entertainment. Even something as seemingly mundane as the beating of Chinese drums is turned into a colorfully synchronized entertainment experience that is amazing to see and hear.

Acrobats of China is a virtual cornucopia of one amazing, entertaining, and exiting act after another that seamlessly melds into one grand choreographed entertainment experience for both adults and children. Although it would be impossible to discuss each act in one article the discussion of a few highlights will hopefully serve to illustrate the entertainment experience that is the Acrobats of China.

The Human Strength act is a beautiful demonstration of strength, agility, and coordination. Like most of the acts involved with the show, the costuming is great and the skill, grace and precision of the performers is left to speak for itself.

The Chair Stack act starts on top of a table and rapidly rises in height with the addition of three chairs. After she does a one hand stand she adds a fourth chair, a table and, well, I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but suffice it to say it’s an exciting end to an incredible performance completed high above the stage.

The Aerial Fish Ballet is a beautiful ballet performed on top of a table on a hand stand. She does all the ballet moves while supporting herself with one hand. It is a magnificent and elegant thing to witness and experience.

Even in a show as action filled and fast paced as this one, the Russian Bar act stands out for its fast pace and highflying action. The “flyer” gets catapulted high into the air as their teammates tumble and land on the other end of the bar (catapult) that sends them high above the stage. All this writer knows is that even as he was sitting there witnessing the act he thought to himself, “This is amazing, but how do I describe it and do it justice?” The answer is, “I don’t, you just have to see it yourself and be amazed.”

The real story on the Acrobats of China, one just has to see it and be amazed. The word “Incredible” used to be in the show’s title, but in the title or not, the Acrobats of China is one beautiful, colorful, exciting and incredible entertainment experience.

Ever since I started here at the Branson Tri-Lakes News at the end of May, I have had the pleasure of meeting, interviewing and seeing some of the best performers in the area.

With the notable exception of the Comets who, in addition to being true legends of rock ‘n’ roll, are one of my favorite shows in town, I try not to interject my opinion when it comes to shows.

That was until I got the chance to see Neal McCoy last Thursday night at the Yakov Smirnoff Theater. I was, for lack of a better word, stunned.

Spending the majority of my teenage years in the 1990s, I was very familiar with McCoy’s music. “Wink,” “For a Change” and “The Shake” have always been songs that made me think of a happier time in my life. Being a fan of his music already, I was intrigued when Yakov Smirnoff told me he’d be hitting town this year.

At first I was worried that yet another country star thought performing in Branson would be easy money. It happens all the time. They show up with their big buses, big names and big egos, expecting to do their stage show and knock the crowd dead. More often than not, those acts fall face first.

Not McCoy. He was funny, enduring and without a doubt, put on one of the most fun and exciting shows I have ever seen on a Branson stage. I had a big cheesy grin on my face the entire time, and I wasn’t the only one. People in the audience ranged in ages from 4 to 84, and McCoy was able to entertain them all.

Neal McCoy in Branson: Enjoying the small stage

Neal McCoy loves to have fun, and more importantly, he likes his audiences to have fun. Now that he is performing in Branson again, he gets to have a different type of fun.

“When we play festivals and fairs, places like that, it is high intensity, high energy,” McCoy said. “Here, we keep the energy level high, but I get to sing again and do some music we don’t normally get to do.”

There are several differences between McCoy’s regular concerts and his Branson show. He brought in a new band for his tenure in Branson.

“I brought this group in so we could do ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ and ‘Straighten Up and Fly Right,’” McCoy said. “People in town appreciate the variety. Plus, playing festivals and other places, we don’t get to do that a lot.”

Another thing McCoy doesn’t have is a set list.

“You will never see the same show twice because I have never done the same show twice,” McCoy said. To read the rest of the story click here:

Performing in Moe Bandy's Blood: Has Show at Jim Stafford Theatre in Branson Missouri

Success never came easy for Moe Bandy.

Born in Meridian, Miss., in 1944, Bandy’s family relocated to Texas when he was in the first grade. Bandy was taught to play the guitar by his father, but made little use of the ability until he was in his teens.

“My father taught me a few chords on the banjo, so I knew a little bit,” Bandy said. “They used to dress me up in a little cowboy hat. I’d sing in talent contests and I also played for relatives.”

As Bandy grew older, he fell in love with the sport of rodeo. He tried bronco-busting and bull-riding and by the time he was 16, he was competing in rodeos all over Texas.

“I put my music aside and concentrated on being a rodeo rider,” Bandy said. “I also worked as a sheet-metal worker in addition to being out on the road all the time. But I loved it all the same.”

In 1962, after breaking the same collar bone twice in the same week and getting a horn to his left side, he began to pursue a career in country music.

Bandy and a few fellow musicians began playing during their downtime when they were asked to play in a bar.

“We played that first night and got a great response,” Bandy said. “They invited us back, and Moe Bandy and the Country Partners were paid $5 a night.”

Our tour group was treated to more than a dozen country music concerts or variety performances, including Jim Stafford, Moe Bandy, Buck Trent, Barbara Fairchild, Shoji Tabuchi, Yakov Smirnoff, Pretty Miss Norma Jean, the Rankin Brothers, Alan Edwards, Odessa native Ricky Boen and Texas Mud, and Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede pageant.

Live Music Shows are Branson's Entertainment Heart

Who could have known back in 1959 that when the Mabe family started performing their country music variety show called the “Baldknobbers,” in a small 50 seat basement room in the Branson Community Center, the show would still be going 50 years later? Who would have thought that not only would the Baldknobbers be around 50 years later, but that that there would be another 99 or so shows of every type and description also entertaining millions of Branson guests?

If, in 1959, someone had said, “50 years from now people will be coming from all over the world to see live music shows in Branson” they would have been laughed at. Well, no one’s laughing now.

Oh sure, the millions of visitors coming to Branson come to see more than shows. They come to see the natural wonder of the Ozark Mountains, play or fish in one of our three lakes, go to Silver Dollar City to one of Branson’s many other attractions, shop or participate in the myriad of activities and things there is to see and do in and around Branson. But, let there be no doubt about it, the very heart beat of Branson’s entertainment heart started with the first beat of music from the Baldknobbers show 50 years ago.

The folks at Silver Dollar City (SDC), near Branson, Missouri, are dressed up, settled in, decked out, revved up and altogether ready for An Old Time Christmas 2008, the 21st SDC Christmas festival. A thousand decorated trees and more than four million lights bring the Ozark theme park to sparkling life day and night. What an invitation for families looking for a new Christmas treat.

USA Today, CNN Travel and Good Morning America have all cited SDC's Old Time Christmas as one of the nation's top holiday celebrations. Having been there for the last three Christmases, I'll have to agree with the secular media on this one!

What can you expect? Well, for starters, lots of lights. After dark a five-story Christmas tree in the square is the star of a special effects music and light show every 15 minutes. The tree's thousands of lights dance and shimmer to the beat of the music. And a Holiday Light Parade has eight lighted floats with 100,000 lights. Branson, according to legend, comes from an old Native American word.

It means “bumper-to-bumper,” according to musician-comedian Jim Stafford, who is propagating said legend about the entertainment hotbed in southwest Missouri.

Under the experienced direction of Ruth and James Duncan, 50 Granger Roadrunners began their fall journey bright and early Oct. 25. Twenty newcomers were acquainted with the rules and, after a brief Sunday morning service, were off in a modern climate controlled bus with driver Alfonzo. The group had breakfast in Waco and continued to Fort Smith, Ark. and through the Ozarks.

The Roadrunners arrived in Branson Mo. in time for their first show, “Twelve Irish Tenors.” After a delicious dinner and an entertaining cook/owner, the group attended the show “Six.”

On Oct. 28 the group toured the Mt. Nut Man and Fruit Company. Afterward the Roadrunners went to the “Dalena Ditto” show. Patty Davidson and friends, who appeared with Dalena, was a very comical ventriloquist. The group traveled to Eureka Springs, where it toured the new Holy Land.

On Oct. 29, the travelers took a trip to Stone Hill Winery for a brief history followed by sampling and shopping opportunities.

The Hughes Brothers show was very entertaining. It was great to see this very family show where even the smallest offspring were featured musical artists. After lunch, the group took some free time to shop at Branson Landing and at an outlet mall.

Clay Cooper, a native Texan, performed that night. During the show, Ed and Julia Schmidt were recognized as the couple longest married.

After an event-filled three days and delicious meals, the group headed back to Taylor with an overnight stay in Bossier City, La. and a trip to the Casino. On Oct. 31, the bus atmosphere was filled with laughter, low chatter and evidence of new and renewed friendships. After a tour of the American Rose center, Libby Glass Outlet and Russell Stover’s Chocolate factory, the Roadrunners arrived home.

Members of the group from Taylor are M/M Kenneth Randig, Betty Randig, Kay Hortenstine, Gladys Mott, Phyllis Johnson, Dora Mae Farr, M/M Herman Kaase, M/M David Krueger and Marsella Schoener.

Members from Thrall are Margie Posey, Doris Kosik, Lucille Rosenthal and Carmel Newman.

Members from Hutto are M/M Ed Schmidt and Peggy Almquist.

Presleys promise, produce in Branson's best family tradition

It was my first visit to the Presley show, and it definitely won't be my last. In their 2008 Christmas show, they mix fine performance on fiddle, keyboard, guitar, harmonica and more with moving vocals on Southern gospel, country classics and new country. Another show we went to see was The Osmond's with a tribute to Broadway. We couldn't take pictures, but here is the playbill that was on the stage before the show.

Then the weather turned really, really cold. So we put on all our winter weather clothes and headed to Silver Dollar City to see the Christmas lights, and the shows. It was so cold we didn't walk around too much, but we did stay to see the lighting of the Christmas Tree. It is all digital lights and changes colors to music. All the trees and buildings in the park have lights on them. Over 6 million lights! They have a light parade twice a night, so we had to see that, too. Then we headed for the car and turned on the heat full blast! It got down in the 30's at night and one night we had to unhook our water hose so it wouldn't freeze, below 30 that night.

While we were at Silver Dollar City we saw the musical production of Dickens Christmas Carol. It was as good as plays on Broadway. We were very impressed.

An Ozark Mountain Christmas draws thousands to Branson

When Mark and Susan Lasiter retired and moved to Branson from Southern California, they knew they had landed in a very special place.

“Riverside was getting too crowded, too dangerous and too expensive, so we moved to the most beautiful city in America,” Susan said while standing on the Branson Landing admiring the holiday decorations with her family. “I think it’s great that the Christmas season starts so early here. I love it.”

Sunny Lasiter, Susan’s daughter-in-law, poked a little fun at her in-laws.

“They are Christmas-a-holics,” she laughed. “The only reason they moved here is for the Christmas shows.

“In Branson,” Susan explained, “we have five seasons: spring, summer, winter, fall ... and Christmas.”

The Lasiters are not alone in their love of all things Christmas. Tens of thousands of Americans will make the Yuletide trip to Branson to do some shopping, catch up with family and friends and take in a few Christmas shows.

Through the end of December, most Branson theaters haul out the holly, fill up the stockings, jingle some bells and add more than a few traditional Christmas carols to their performances to welcome tourists to the community’s signature “Ozark Mountain Christmas.”

The 2nd Annual Branson Elvis Tribute Artist Contest will take place on July 2nd, 2008 at 7:00PM. The Branson contest is one of only a select few tribute competitions sanctioned by Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. around the world.

"Legends has featured remarkably talented Elvis tribute artists in our shows worldwide for 25 years and we are thrilled to once again host a preliminary round in Branson for this exciting contest," said Brian Brigner, Chief Operating Officer of On Stage entertainment, producers of Legends in Concert. "The contest last year at our theater was a smashing success and this year’s promises to be even bigger and better, as we crown the tribute artist that best represents the legacy of Elvis Presley and proudly send them to Memphis to represent this venue.”

The winner of the Legends Theater contest in Branson will receive a $1,000 prize and a spot in The 2008 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest finals presented by Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. in Memphis during the annual Elvis Week, August 9-17. Judges will look for the “best representation of the Elvis legacy” in talent, appearance, performance, stage presence, and overall tribute to Elvis in naming the "2008 Elvis Tribute Artist of the Year." The 2nd Annual Branson Elvis Tribute ArtistÒ Contest winner will also be offered the opportunity to perform live at the Legends in Concert 8pm show on July 3rd, 2008.

Contest tickets are $20.00 for preferred seating and $15 for general admission seating. Tickets can be purchased at the Legends in Concert box office or by calling 800-374-SHOW.

It may be 75 degrees outside and more than three weeks before Thanksgiving, but it’s Christmas in Branson, Mo. Shows in the musical entertainment capital switch to the season the first Saturday in November, and this year that happened on Nov. 1.

Saturday night I went to see the opening show of the Lennon Sisters and Tony Orlando at the Welk Theater. As former television performers, the Lennons and Orlando all have stage presence and know how to put on a commanding performance. When a group has performed regularly before 30 million people — as the Lennon Sisters did on TV on Saturday nights — they have what it takes to please an audience.

“Da lovely Lennon Sisters” were the most famous regulars on The Lawrence Welk Show on ABC from 1955-68. They later sang each week on TV with Andy Williams and Jimmy Durante. Although Dee Dee and Peggy are now retired, Kathy and Janet sing nightly in Branson, with youngest sister Mimi. The women still have beautiful harmonies.

Tony Orlando also had his own weekly variety series during the mid-1970s with backup singers Dawn. The trio had three number one hits: Knock Three Times, He Don’t Love You (Like I Love You) and, most famously, Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree — the second most popular recorded song ever, after only Yesterday by the Beatles.

Legends In Concert has new home starting in 2009

Celebrated tribute artist production ‘Legends in Concert’ announced today that they have signed a multi-year, multi-dimensional agreement with GEP, Inc., the owner of the Dick Clark American Bandstand Theater, becoming its resident headline entertainment attraction commencing in 2009. "Legends has enjoyed tremendous success in the Branson market since 1996,” said Jeannie Horton, General Manager for Legends in Concert. “This new theater will allow the introduction of many exciting enhancements to our production that both our loyal Legends fans and new guests are certain to enjoy. We look forward to an even brighter future as our show moves to this fabulous new entertainment facility, a true state-of-the-art venue.”

The ultimate Branson rock and roll complex, the Dick Clark American Bandstand Theater boasts over 900 seats, yet its innovative design creates an intimate concert space with great sight lines to the stage, cushy comfortable seats with generous leg room, a dance floor, spectacular projection screens and fascinating memorabilia recalling the historic roots of rock ‘n’ roll and country music.

“Legends” will perform daily at the Theater at 3:00pm and 8:00pm, except Wednesdays. The specific performer line-up and the announcement of the morning show for 2009, will be released by the company in the coming weeks.

Current “Legends” performances will continue as scheduled through December 31, 2008 at The Legends Family Theater, including its traditional holiday themed version and New Year’s Eve Extravaganza, both long-time Branson favorites.

Todd, Michelle and their 8 children are performing their original Christmas musical entitled, “Simply Christmas”, at the Circle B Theatre, from November 1 through December 31.

BRANSON, Mo. — Steve Vrana said he loves a good laugh.“I like the comedy,” the Wahoo, Neb., resident said as he waited for the second half of the Comedy Jamboree at Grand Country in Branson to begin. “The ‘Hee Haw’ part was my favorite,” he said of a segment of the show that paid tribute to the comedy of Cornfield County, U.S.A. “It’s really good, funny comedy."

“I thought it would be for old fogies, but it’s not,” his wife, Raleen, added.

That’s what emcee and producer Mike Patrick likes to hear.“I love it. It’s just infectious,” Patrick said, sitting in his backstage office after a performance. “We are in a business that has instant gratification because there are people applauding. I tell all my employees, ‘You’re not a musician, you’re not an entertainer, you are in the people business. (Branson MO ~ Wednesday, October 15, 2008) Kirby & Bambi VanBurch, internationally renowned entertainers and illusionists, were honored with another special award, “Best Illusionist”, at the World Magic Awards 2008 in Santa Monica, California. The annual event was held on October 11 and was filmed for an upcoming TV special on MyNetworkTV.

Awards are something the VanBurch duo knows a lot about. In 2008 Bambi received the Female International Magician of the Year award for the 2nd consecutive year. “That’s never been done by any other female magician,” says Kirby. “And then she was voted one of the top 10 most beautiful women in 417 Land. And now we’ve been honored by the World Magic Awards Show. Hey…the family that wins awards together stays together!” Bambi adds that “the World Magic Awards show was a lot of fun and since it was a benefit for Feed The Children, that made it extra special for Kirby and me.”
